I all,
I have a problem on my Windows Vista that began afetr the purchase of an external Hard Disk Freecom.
A few days afetr the purchase I disconnected it while it was writing and, since that moment, every time I connect and disconnect it, the PC go to freeze mode for 5 minutes.
The same thing happen even if the hard disk is disconnected: every time I start windows it go to freeze a little after the password, and every time I connect and disconnect a usb device.
I have looked for the solution everywhere, updated windows, unistalled and installed the hard disk from the device manager but I solved the problem only when I restored a recent backup.
Yesterday the Hard disk was writing a backup while Vista was installing the updates; at the end of the proceure windows restarted automatically and the problem began again!!!
The Pc go to freeze when it starts, every time I connect or disconnect the hard disk, an usb earphone that has always worked switch on but there is no audio and I don't know how many others usb devices will have problems.
Has anyone an idea to solve this problem before I throw out of the window Vista or the the hard disk?

I got it to work somehow! I double clicked on my .wlwbackup file which again caused a crash of the program. But when I then started wlwbackup it worked! The only other thing which is new is that I installed DirectX August 2009 edition, but I don't think that has anything to do with it...

Maybe it's time to phase out XP, XP sucks. It's old hat. With Windows 7, XP is a pile.

How about you people get rid of XP finally and move into the current world and get Windows 7. No XP is not the end all, it's x years old, get over it.

You're not the only one. The only thing I can suggest now is to do a repair of WLWBackup.

You're not the only one. The only thing I can suggest now is to do a repair of WLWBackup.

I just installed .net 3.5 SP1 and restarted but wlwbackup still gives an error:

I try to install .net 3.5 but I get a setup error after it downloaded 0 KB and tried to install, so I guess 3.5 is already installed somehow... I have Visual Studio 2008 installed, shouldn't that include the latest .net?

Hi,

I have trouble using wlwbackup after I reinstalled Windows XP. I've installed all the recent microsoft updates but somehow wlwbackup crashes. This is the error signature:

BTW. I also noticed in the sourcecode that you make some temporary reg files at some point and use them as parameters to regedit. You do this with process.start. Will regedit run with Elevated permissions in this case ? I am not sure.

Similar problem here. XP x86 backup, does not restore to neither Win 7 x86 or Win7 x64. I have investigated further and found that the reason is an unathorizedexception when trying to write to registry. Unfortunately you do not log which key is the problem. I have looked at all keys in the settings.xml and blogsettings.xml in the wlwbackup file. I have examined all keys with regedit, and I have Full Control permission for all. I have read somewhere that this error can occur when you forget to call opensubkey with second parameter equal to true. Could that be the case ? (Of course I run elevated to administrator, and I have tried to turn of UAC).

I also had this problem... XP x32 backup could not be restored to a Vista x64 computer.

Ah, that's good to know, thanks. I'll put some checks in to see if Writer has been run on the new system, and advise if it hasn't. Thanks for your feedback.

Right. Starting Windows Live Writer first and then restoring afterwards solved the issue.

I can't commpile. I went to the download page and downloaded the source zip file. I opened up the solution file and tried to build the solution.

I got this error:

New thoughts? I have never had anything to do with WPF and I have no idea what the error means...

Seems there is an issue with the version of subversion that codeplex is running; http://codeplex.codeplex.com/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=24252

I have downloaded the zipped source instead and will start investigating now..

Quite possibly, yes. Although, I haven't been able to check in the changes for 3.0.0.5 yet (reinstalling all your machines can be a bitch sometimes :)), however, the change made in 3.0.0.5 shouldn't affect the startup so the chances are you might see the same problem with that version (3.0.0.4). I will be very interested in your results.

So it seems this is the right version.

I have VS.NET 2008 installed - perhaps the easy way is for me to download the source code and debug from there? Or do you have any other thoughts?
