If there are any characters that are not ASCII encoding will cause backup saved a wrong encoding xml files. That cause restore may fail or some characters are become question mark ( ? ).

I all,
I have a problem on my Windows Vista that began afetr the purchase of an external Hard Disk Freecom.
A few days afetr the purchase I disconnected it while it was writing and, since that moment, every time I connect and disconnect it, the PC go to freeze mode for 5 minutes.
The same thing happen even if the hard disk is disconnected: every time I start windows it go to freeze a little after the password, and every time I connect and disconnect a usb device.
I have looked for the solution everywhere, updated windows, unistalled and installed the hard disk from the device manager but I solved the problem only when I restored a recent backup.
Yesterday the Hard disk was writing a backup while Vista was installing the updates; at the end of the proceure windows restarted automatically and the problem began again!!!
The Pc go to freeze when it starts, every time I connect or disconnect the hard disk, an usb earphone that has always worked switch on but there is no audio and I don't know how many others usb devices will have problems.
Has anyone an idea to solve this problem before I throw out of the window Vista or the the hard disk?

When running without admin rights it seem to work (shows "Backup completed"), but the wlwbackup file is not written. Logfile shows:

I experience exactly the same behavior. Backup to F: doesn't change anything. Only Admin privileges help. I even tried to write into the same directory where the log file is written, which obviously is accessible, since otherwise the log file couldn't be written. But even there I get the same error, described above.

I've tried to execute wlwbackup as administrator and using compatibility mode with Vista SP2 or WinXP Sp3 and still does not work. There is an unhandled exception as soon it starts.

AHA! Figured it out. FInally took a hint from the XAMLParser error. This was a new computer and I was trying to import the settings from another copmuter before starting up LiveWriter. This was the reason WLWBakup was throwing the error. Once I opened WLW and configured a blog then tehre was some XAML for WLW Backup to read. So the problem is that WLW's settings file didn't exist.

Hi Scott,
I'm having this problem also (win7 x64). I'm attaching the log file (wer from event viewer). Let me know if you needed a different one.
There is no WLW folder inside of appdata local or local low or roaming folders.

I got it to work somehow! I double clicked on my .wlwbackup file which again caused a crash of the program. But when I then started wlwbackup it worked! The only other thing which is new is that I installed DirectX August 2009 edition, but I don't think that has anything to do with it...

I just installed .net 3.5 SP1 and restarted but wlwbackup still gives an error:

I try to install .net 3.5 but I get a setup error after it downloaded 0 KB and tried to install, so I guess 3.5 is already installed somehow... I have Visual Studio 2008 installed, shouldn't that include the latest .net?
